How to Use a Manual Toothbrush Correctly

  1.  Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle toward the gumline
  2. Use small circular or vibrating motions — do not scrub
  3. Clean 2–3 teeth at a time
  4. Brush the outer surfaces of all teeth
  5. Brush the inner surfaces using the same gentle motion
  6. Use the tip of the brush vertically behind front teeth
  7. Brush the chewing surfaces with short strokes
  8. Gently brush the gumline — this is where plaque accumulates most
  9. Brush for 2 minutes total
  10. Brush twice daily

A systematic approach with bristles angled toward the gums improves plaque removal at the gumline without causing damage.

Good brushing technique matters more than force. In fact, using the wrong toothbrush or brushing too aggressively can damage enamel and gums. This guide explains the correct way to brush with a manual toothbrush and why dentists recommend soft bristles only.

Why You Should Always Use a Soft Toothbrush

  • Soft or extra-soft bristles are recommended, and harder brushes do not clean more effectively but can cause soft and hard tissue damage.
  • Soft bristles are recommended because they minimise the risk of. gingival abrasion even though medium bristles can remove plaque.
  • Soft bristles are gentler on your gums and reduce enamel wear while still removing plaque effectively.

Patients often unintentionally damage their teeth by:

  • Using a medium or hard toothbrush
  • Scrubbing back-and-forth aggressively
  • Brushing too hard
  • Brushing immediately after acidic drinks
  • Using a large brush head
  • Not brushing along the gumline
  • Toothbrush abrasion from excessive pressure and stiff bristles commonly causes V-shaped defects near the gums, sensitivity, and long-term tooth wear.

Medium brushes do not clean better. They only increase the risk of:

  • Gum recession
  • Toothbrush abrasion
  • Enamel wear
  • Sensitivity
  • Exposed root surfaces
  • Soft brushes clean effectively without damaging teeth or gums.
